Understanding how search
engines operate can be illuminating- and reassuring. When a user
conducts a search in Alta Vista or one of the other indexing search
services, the result is entirely dependent on the keywords or
phrases used. A search for steel girder retrieves 861,070 results. A
search for +steel +girder and then for "steel girder" will
give very different numbers, but in each case Alta Vista will
attempt to rank the results so that the most relevant ones are at
the top of the list.
This demonstrated both
the strength and weakness of the search engines- they are large and
powerful databases, but they can only respond to the information
provided by the searcher. For example if you manage a web site for a
steel fabrications information service, and you typically refer to
your product as "RSJs" (rolled or rigid steel joists) ,
then your site may simply not appear as a result of the searches
shown in the table, despite the obvious relevance of your service to
the needs of the searcher.
