Establishing links
Reciprocal Links
A ‘related links’
page adds value to your site: increase the benefit by requesting the
owners of linked sites to place a return link on their pages.
Remember that this is a favour, not an obligation. You cannot
insist, but if you can show that the content on your site is of
direct relevance to their visitors, then it is often mutually
beneficial to link the two sites. Links to and from sites that
themselves have high traffic and good links pages will improve the
traffic flow for your site. If chosen well, they should also attract
qualified and motivated visitors who are actively searching for the
information or service that you provide.
WebRing
(www.webring.com)
A structured system of
reciprocal links which allows web sites with similar interest to
form "rings" of sites, allowing visitors a fast and
efficient way to find content, is a useful way for sites to build
traffic and gain exposure.
A minimum of five
like-minded sites is required to start a ring. Each site then adds a
link at the bottom of their page, which takes the visitor to the ‘next’
site in the ring. As a web manager, you might seek a ring to join,
or you might decide to set up a ring for information sites in your
sector. One potentially profitable strategy is to join or start a
ring where the other members are already high-traffic sites. This
way you gain benefit from their existing high profile. The key aim
after all is to gain a net inflow of traffic.
Measuring Progress
Keep a chart or
spreadsheet listing those sites to which you have sent link
requests, as well as those that have requested links from you to
them. You can search to identify sites which have links to you:
HotBot offers an option in the drop down menu, and on Alta Vista you
should use the search dialogue:
which searches for all
instances of your URL except for those on your own site.
